I’ve been looking for a small fire pit/grill combo to make for our patio, and found a beautiful concept that was developed by two German designers. To make this piece a reality, I had to think outside the box, as I don’t have all the equipment to bend or roll steel plate. I took a 6″ OD round tube, and cut it on my CNC plasma table to get the pieces that I need. Here are the pictures of the first few steps today!

Here is a picture of the simple jig I made to be able to cut the tube on my plasma table. -
I marked the center line on the jig and transferred it to the edge of the pipe. -
Here is the setup on the plasma table, ready to go with the first cut. -
I love the gantry height on my table, which allows me to try things like this! I rotated the tube to make the second cut. -
Here is one of the half tubes ready to be split in half in the same jig. -
Here are the pieces after cutting on my welding table. Everything stayed pretty straight! -
Some additional pieces for the fire pit cut from 1/4″ plate. -
These pieces will be the sides and the bottom of the fire pit. -
Setup for welding the quarter round pieces to the sides on the inside. -
A little bit of grinding, and it will look like one piece. -
Welding the outside. -
Nice and straight! -
Grinding the insides! -
Ready to weld the side pieces to the bottom plate. -
Here is the setup, ready to go tomorrow morning! -
