I felt a lot better today, and I had to make some serious progress on the table base, so I have it ready for when the top plate will be delivered. Here are some pictures of what happened today!
-
Here are all the 2″ x 4″ tubing pieces for the top frame. Wall thickness is 1/4″. -
I welded some square tubing pieces for the corners of the top frame, so I can receive and clamp my vise the same way I did on my old welding table. -
I picked up my welding table with the forklift and turned it 90 degrees in the shop to be able to weld the complete new top frame together. -
Here are the outside frame pieces clamped to the welding table and welded together. Checking with the levels to make sure it is all nice, and square, and flat. -
After finish welding the complete frame, I welded the mounting plates for the legs to the top frame. -
Here is a closeup! -
To finish weld the top of the frame and the mounting plates, I had to flip the frame 180 degrees. This frame is very heavy, so I used my forklift. -
Moving the lifting slings from the center to the opposite side before lifting. -
When the frame was standing vertical, I switched the lifting slings to the other side, and by slowly driving backwards. while lowering the forks, I had the frame right side up. -
After finish welding the top of the farme, I installed all the legs to see how it all comes together. -
Another closeup of the receiver for my vise. -
Another view of the whole base frame. -
I only used two bolts per leg for now. Now I can take some dimensions for additional pieces that will be part of this table base. -

A closeup of one of my future ‘Bench Dogs”. -
The top frame is 113″ long by 53″ deep, the top will be 118″ long by 58″ deep. My current table is 60″ long by 40″ deep. I will have a lot more surface to clamp pieces for welding in the future. I’m starting to get excitedabout the possibilities!
