My goal for today was to get the curved handrail fabricated and mounted to the ramp! I got it done, and here are the pictures to prove it. Tomorrow is a day to finish a couple details and get it ready for delivery to the powder coating company.
Before I started to weld the post brackets to the ramp, I took some dimensions for the overall length of the handrail, and the start and stop of the bend. Later I added the height of the posts to see how much I had to cut them back to get a consistent height of the handrail.
Getting started and making sure the post is locked in place and vertical.
Welding on the floor is no fun! I love my welding table!
Here is a post bracket welded in place!
All the brackets are finish welded!
Checking the angle to replicate the same on the top of the posts for the handrail.
Setting up my belt grinder to notch the tops of the posts.
Starting to notch a sample. I love my little homemade setup!
It removed material very quickly and provides a nice fit for welding.
Here is my test piece.
All the tops are notched, and the posts are cut to the correct height for the handrail.
Based on my initial measurements, I’m cutting the handrail to length, a 196.25″ total.
Starting line of the bend!
Ending line of the bend!
My brand new bending dies just arrived today!
Getting started to bend the handrail.
It’s going to take a little while with a manual bender, using a handcrank!
Seeing some progress!
I ran out of space inside as I started to hit the ceiling both ways! So I moved the whole affair outside and continued until it started to rain,
I had to tweak it a couple times to make it fit!
Here I’m in the process of welding the handrail to the posts.
A closeup of one of the welds.
All the welding of the posts is finished.
I reached my goal!
Tomorrow I will finish it up and get it ready for powder coating on Monday.
