Jeff Hoffman, the owner of Hoffman’s Inc., brought one of his best clients to my shop, to discuss the possibility of fabricating a unique table base for a dining table. The client already purchased a beautiful slab of solid Mappa Burl to be the top of this dining table. Just the piece of wood will be spectacular when it is finished, so I’m excited to have the opportunity to make the steel table base for it. The client has also an incredible beer can collection, and wants to have some metal beer signs incorporated into the table base. Here are the first steps of this project!
-
Here is the Mappa Burl slab! It will look spectacular when it is finished! -
I traced the live edge of the slab onto a piece of cardboard for the layout of the steel table base. -

Here are the ends of the bottom rails after welding and grinding. -
Leg levelers are incorporated into the bottom rails. -
Welding the leg frames on my fixure table. Everything is nice and square! -
Making some spacers for the signs on each end of the table base -
I just pounded these 3/8″ nuts into some tubing. It fit perfectly! -
Welding the spacers to the leg frames. My “third hand” comes in handy to hold them in place for welding. -
There are 4 spacers to hold the metal signs on each leg frame. -
A closeup of a welded spacer. -
The metal signs are bolted to the leg frames. -
Next step will be welding the bottom rails and top plates to the leg frames. Tomorrow will be the day!
