A client asked if I would be interested in making a 12′ by 5.5′ piece of metal art for his conference room. He emailed me an image over the weekend, and we had a chance to meet and discuss different possibilities on Monday. On Tuesday, I was able to sent him a drawing of the actual piece, and after approval today, I was ready to start cutting! Here are the pictures of the start of this project! After a lot of layout work in AutoCAD, I was able to cut all the building shapes out of some 12ga hot rolled mild steel sheet stock. -
I nested the pieces to be able to get as much yield out of a sheet as possible., but it didn’t fit all in one sheet. Here is what it looks like after removing all the pieces. Chopping up the leftover with an angel grinder takes a little while. -
After cleaning and grinding! -
Just to show some detail. -
Another view. -
Here is the complete piece assembled with some nuts and bolts on my 5′ by 10′ welding table. Just to make sure it all fits, and all the bolt holes are in the right spot! -
Here is a closeup. Now I have to fabricate all the different spacers to mount it to the wall. Lots of work left to keep me busy!
