As soon as I had finished the litte end table base for my friend Ken, he came with the next set of drawings for an industrial looking ottoman base made from steel. After we discussed different profiles, material thicknesses, and leg details, I sent him a CAD drawing to show him the finished look of the base. I went ahead and ordered all the materials, and I was off to the races, as they say! Here are the first steps of the process to build this ottoman base!
The first pieces of flat stock are cut and ready for welding the top and bottom frames.
The vertical pieces of the top frame are welded together and the corners finished to be ready for the next step.
The finished dimension of the base will be 3′ wide by 5′ long.
The frames stacked on top of each other to create the look of a heavy C-channel.
Stitch welding the pieces together after marking all the weld locations.
Drawing the layout of the leg detail on the frame with a sharpie!
After cutting the pieces for the legs, I’m starting to weld them together.
This simple little jig is helpful to tack weld everything together.
The last piece of the leg clamped in place and ready for welding.
