A friend of mine wanted a kitchen center island with a industrial look and feel, so he asked me to build a U-shaped frame for him. This frame will surround the interior cabinetry and is ready to receive some panels on the sides and front. The steel frame will be clear coated to show the natural color and texture of steel. Here are some images to show the process!
Starting to weld the side frames together
The exposed welds were to be clean and without finish grinding.
To get the center rail, I had to cut a square tube in half. I used my plasma table to get it done. This was a first!
After the first cut, I flipped the tube over and held it in place with some strong magnets.
The second cut! Fire in the hole! 🙂
It worked beautifully without any problems! I will try something else in the future with square tubing on my plasma table!
Besides a lot of smoke during cutting, cleanup was minimal!
Clamping the center rail in place.
A close up of the center piece clamped in place for welding.
Having the complete frame on the table.
Another view!
Getting ready to weld some plates into the half tube to stiffen it up a bit!
After welding!
An outside weld and the tabs to mount the wodden panels. The weld stops to allow the panel to go into the corner.
The frame coming of the welding table with 2×4 shipping braces in place. Ready to go!
